Covid-19 vs Harry and Meghan

I have never been a fan of Mr and Mrs Mountbatten-Windsor (as I think they should be called having left the royal family). Don’t get me wrong, I am a monarchist and, as such, have not had any ill-feeling towards Harry, for the most part I still don’t. Now whilst I could talk about their hypocritical ways and the hundreds of things people condemn them for I won’t. I may reference them but this post is not about hating on the couple, there are plenty of other people to do that. I do not begrudge or judge them for it; the Duke and Duchess of Sussex haven’t done much to endear themselves to people, just their small clique of devoted fans. However I do feel a change in the winds.
When Meghan first arrived on the scene we knew very little about her other than her heritage and career, such as it was. I have no idea how well known she was in the States but I had never heard of her. It wasn’t like Harry had fallen for Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johansson, she was pretty unknown. Of course, marrying into the royal family made her a national celebrity, it was a short courtship and all seemed to happen very quickly, practically the opposite of the Cambridge’s relationship.
Despite her comments to the contrary, I believe that Meghan likes to be in the spotlight. She has always been happy to smile and pose for photographs and always managed to make headlines. From becoming the latest member of the family to deciding to leave it (her husband in tow like the loyal puppy she seems determined to make him) she has always been willing to tell all to any magazine, newspaper or any media outlet that will give her the exposure she so obviously craves. If she can sell it she will, if they can put the spin she wants on it, so much the better. All this ‘oh we want our privacy’ falls incredibly flat when the next we hear she’s trying to sell herself as a brand and sign every deal she can. These deals will not only give her more exposure and fame but they will put her firmly in the spotlight, where she wants to be. It also seems she’s doing a good job of getting Harry to fall into the background. Now they are no longer part of the royal family, she has turned the tables, now instead of her being Prince Harry’s wife; he has become Meghan Markle’s husband.
Now, I’m not saying she’s not talented; she is a mistress of manipulation, hypocrisy, self-promotion and sob stories, her acting skill never failing her. However I feel her mask beginning to slip. If she and Harry had quietly slipped off to the Americas and started a quiet family life there, maybe done a few deals to keep themselves solvent, I could have totally believed they just wanted privacy and as normal a family life as possible. Instead, they make a big deal about moving, leaving the quiet, peaceful Canada for the bustling paparazzi filled glitz and glamour of Los Angeles USA. Next, Meghan is using every tool at her disposal to be seen, recognised and get back into the acting game. Then came the kicker, Disney. Disney is fast becoming one of the most powerful and influential companies in the world. Owning Star Wars, Marvel and ESPN, on top of being the multi-million dollar industry that all started with a mouse, it has a pretty fair chance of taking over the world in the not too distant future. The news that Meghan Markle was in talks to sign a deal with them was big news. There was talk she wanted to star in a superhero movie. (I was really hoping that would happen and it would be a box office flop, I’m vindictive like that) There were people who said she needed Disney a lot more than they needed her, while a few people said Disney was desperate to sign her. Then it happened, they dropped her like a hot potato. Here is where everything started to go south for Meghan. I truly believe she was counting on working with Disney. It was to be her big achievement, her well and truly back on the road to success and, just like that, it was over. Then Covid-19 happened. The big deal fell through and her ability to grab headlines was well and truly steamrollered. On top of that, her father-in-law got it and all the sympathy went to her husband, he was number one again and she realised something. The British media may have turned against her in the end, but Harry is still well-loved, whatever hold she has over him, if she ever loses that, the British public will welcome him back with open arms. Any attempt she makes to grab headlines now will backfire tremendously. Covid-19 has taken her spot and it shows no sign of leaving anytime soon. Now it may be that, come September, the lockdown will be over but even if that happens, the world has changed irrevocably. Things will never go back to the way they were. Now, I am not psychic, I don’t know exactly what will happen, but I can see a vast array of different things changing and a lot of people talking about many different issues. Also, people will need time to grieve, having to leave their loved ones alone to die and not even being able to hold a proper funeral, these people will be holding memorials and planning family get togethers just to cope with what they have so tragically lost. I have a felling it will take at least a year after this pandemic for everything to have some level of normalcy. Lots of time for us to completely lose interest in Meghan. Ant attempt she makes during or right after this time will be seen as unfeeling and selfish, maybe her true colours but I doubt she wants to show them. By the time she’ll be in a position to try and grab headlines we won’t care anymore. Oh she’s had another baby, big whoop Archie isn’t a prince who cares about the spare? Oh she’s signed with Vogue, well are we getting support from her then? Is she using the money from that to pay us back for Frogmore? You don’t know? Then who cares? I honestly think this could be the end of the Harry and Meghan fascination. We will have about a hundred more important things to talk about, especially after such a horrendous world changing event. Now, I could be wrong, maybe this is a minor short-term setback. My vindictive side hopes not, my vindictive side hopes that this is the end of their popularity and public interest. I hope that anything they do will be regulated to page ten of the paper and an afterthought on the news (if they make it at all). However it goes, this may be the one thing to knock Meghan off her game, off her perch and slap both her and her husband into the grim reality. Covid-19 could be the one thing that ends the spotlight hugging power trip she is on. And if it is, perhaps Harry will wake-up to the manipulative hypocrite that is his wife and he’ll come back to us. If that does happened, it’ll be a clear silver lining to such a horrible time.
